Day 6

Grand Canyon

The premier destination on our cross-country trip was certainly the Grand Canyon. In order to fully appreciate the experience we decided to take a train ride from Williams Arizona into the Canyon (okay not quite into the canyon because we turned to the left at the last minute. :-) The change of scenery was both sudden and dramatic. One minute we were in the Aspen filled woods, and the next we were overlooking the canyon which extended more than a mile down and almost 10 miles across in some places. Our Bus Driver/Tour Guide for the Canyon was Bob and he proved to have a joke and interesting tidbits to tell us about each destination. See if you can spot the Seven in the pictures below or the rock formation called an Alligator.

The landscape very quickly changes as we approach the edge of the canyon. One of our first views of the tremendous beauty and awesome splendor of this wonder of the world.
The Grand Canyon and the horizon meet in a shot that shows distances that are hard to comprehend. The rapids of the Colorado river that can be seen in this shot are over 15 feet in size and they were about a mile and a half from where I took the shot.
With the aid of our guide, we are able to get a gorgeous picture of the canyon behind us. A shot that shows the beauty of the Grand Canyon set in a sea of blue sky and billowing clouds.
Far down in the canyon, the creator of the amazing wonder can be seen. The colorado river is just visible from this partly zoomed shot. Shhh... We don't want to wake the sleeping alligator. :-)
Could that be something in the rock? A number seven perhaps? :-) It is unknown what purpose these holes in the canyon wall served, but they certainly make an intriguing picture. :-)
These circular openings in the canyon walls are believed to have been the long deserted home of early canyon dwellers. My Dad is nicely framed by the surrounding rocky landscape in an excellent photo shot by yours truly. :-)
