Welcome Fall! Come On In...

Oh... OK... so this only applies to us Northern Hemisphere dwellers, and it even hardly seems appropriate for me... a native of Florida, where we still have the air conditioner going full blast. But for much of our reading population, October means cool autumn air and stuff like that. What a great time to play in the recently fallen leaves, play a little football (the kind with the pointy ball of course)... and to break in a new OS! What d'ja say?

MOSXb

Like thousands of other people... I gave Apple a call recently and said, "Please charge me money to test your unfinished software for you!" So, shortly thereafter, I was reading all of the disclaimers on the OS X beta packaging -- you know, those disclaimers warning about updating your firmware and stuff and Apple not being responsible if you fry your system... stuff like that. Of course, I didn't come this far to back out now... so into the drive the CD went.

It's beautiful. I'd gotten to play with the developers preview 3 a little bit and this is such a huge step from that... wow! Of course I had a horrible time getting it to dial into my ISP, but once I got that modem script fixed... I was in business. So if I accidentally slip and say, "choose the System Preferences from the Dock," it means I've spent way too much time in X and you might as well write me off.

Of course, if you haven't played with Mac OS X beta yet... I encourage you to try it out. It may be a bit of a shock to those of you who haven't already gotten a taste, but it will let you know what to expect... and of course, it will give you a say in the matter, because Apple is taking feedback! This is your chance to make sure that some of your favorite features makes it into the final version (I'd vote for an Apple Menu if I were you). Uh, so ask not what Apple can do for you... uh... ask what you can do for Apple (other than volunteering your time at retail stores showing off iBooks and flaming ZDNet authors who continue to call Apple beleaguered).

Another Addition

Well, I've recently acquired a bouncing baby Apple Pro Mouse... and let me tell you, it's amazing. I'm not suggesting that it's the end all... for those of you who are used to trackballs or multiple buttons, this probably isn't going to change your mind. But if you are a hockey puck owner, it will make you cry for joy. Definitely worth the money... two thumbs up and stuff.

Some Changes

This month, you may notice a couple of changes... one is temporary, the other is permanent (I think).

First, the temporary: Kevin Bradley is taking a break from his writing duties this month, so there will not be an AppleScript Foundry in this issue. Hopefully, Kevin will be fully refreshed next month and he'll have something insanely great for us to read...

OK, now the permanent: at the bottom of each column, you'll see a new link to that author's feedback form. This feedback form will allow you to send your thoughts to the writer without dragging yourself all the way to your email client. But make sure that you put your correct email address in there. If not... we have no way of writing you back.

Ferazel - Part III

The third installment of the Ferazel's Wand Secrets Guide is available this issue too. Erica has mapped out four more levels: Purple Haze, Obfuscation & Edification, Iceconoclasm, and Hagnabit. These are quite an interesting set of levels here... featuring hang gliding and an introduction to some of the big wigs at Ambrosia.

Find Steve's Home Planet!

Don't know what do do with all of those spare CPU cycles lying around? Put them to a good cause by downloading the SETI@Home screensaver. This screensaver performs all sorts of tests on recordings from the Arecibo radio telescope, helping the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence find Intelligent life out there in space.

Simply download the screensaver from here (hey, there's even a beta version for Mac OS X!), and follow the handy dandy instructions for setting it up.

Mac OS Journal even has a team! So join us if you are so inclined!
