PC's Rule!

Good... I see I have your attention now! Since this is my first article for Mac OS Journal, I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you about upcoming topics, air a few beefs, and let you get to know me. I think that you'll find me to be very opinionated and to the point! You can count on me to tell it like it is... even if it ain't pretty!

A bit about me...

I have a strong background in typography (and that was a tough one to get over when I made the transition from print to web!) as well as over 30 years in pre-press (and I lived to tell about it!). My life changed (for the better) the day I saw my first Mac back in 1986 - and the Internet has made it even better! It's a challenge to stay up-to-date with things these days, but that's what keeps it interesting. My experience also includes Unix and Windows NT... so when I tell you that the Mac is the best for graphics (among other things), don't just take my word for it. The way I see it is this - if it's good enough for Microsoft, Intel and IBM to use in their web design departments... well it's good enough for me!! Besides, The PC Lady doesn't sound nearly as exciting as The Mac Lady!

My Peeves...

PC's Rule? What kind of headline is that? Well fellow Mac Lovers, how many times have you seen a great piece of software on the net (HumanClick is the first to come to mind), only to find out it's available only for PCs? Now that Apple is finally getting its act together (oh yes, I love Steve!!), we are starting to claim a higher market share. Soon, software developers will find it "mandatory" (even profitable) to write Mac versions of their software! Mark my words... we won't be ignored much longer! (and it wouldn't hurt if each time you come across a "PC only" site, you would take a moment to send them an email asking when the Mac version will be available. Believe me, if they see a market for a Mac version, you can be sure they will develop one!)

By the way, I do not, and will never use Microsoft FrontPage. I just may write a review of this program (and I promise it won't be pretty) - so stay tuned...

My HTML Editor...

SimpleText - simply the best (and easiest) program to do your HTML coding in. I use the SimpleText "Color" version which allows me to "color code" my code so it's easy to edit AND (this is a biggie) - it doesn't alter code! I have tons of HTML programs but always go back to SimpleText. Of course, I'm always open to try new things - so send me your suggestions for review! Of course applications like Adobe's GoLive and Macromedia's Dreamweaver do offer some pretty neat features and benefits.

My Plans for Future Columns...

The topic of this column is "Advanced HTML" so if you aren't ready yet, I suggest that you take a good look at Rob Stevenson's Simply Web column and do your homework! And I won't be teaching you Photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator etc... I'm assuming you know how to use them. What we're talking about here is pushing those web pages past dull and ordinary to exciting and alive - while maintaining that all important Form and Function!

We'll be covering Javascript, Java, Applets, CGI, all of the major browsers (and their "individual" quirks... ooops - I meant features!)... page construction - Tables, Frames, Navigation, Image Optimizing, Animation, Image Maps, Image Slicing, HTML Editors, SSI, ASP, PHP - and anything else that strikes my fancy. I might even let you know where I go for the really cool stuff!

As well, I'll be giving advice (usually unsolicited) on what NOT to do when building web sites... oh yes, you can count on that!

Questions? Suggestions? Complaints? I'd love to hear from you, so please drop me a line at nancy@macosjournal.com. See you next month!
